About Us

The Tenants’ Union of Queensland is a statewide, community based, tenancy advice and advocacy organisation for tenants. The Tenants’ Union was established in 1986 and operates a statewide office in Brisbane and a North Queensland office in Cairns.

The Tenants’ Union represents the concerns of Queensland tenants in discussions with government and industry bodies and aims to improve and protect the rights of all people in Queensland who live in rental accommodation, including caravan park and boarding house residents.

The Tenants’ Union provides a range of tenancy information and advocacy services to tenants including: a telephone advice service, tenancy publications, community education activities, tenancy law training, research on tenancy issues, policy development and tenancy law reform campaigns.

The Tenants’ Union is funded from the interest earned on tenant bond money managed by the Residential Tenancies Authority. The Department of Housing administers these funds to the Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Program.

The Tenants’ Union also provides a specialist tenancy law legal service which is funded through the Legal Aid Board.

In recent years, the Tenants’ Union has performed an important role in securing better rights for tenants through advocating improvements to Queensland’s residential tenancy laws.
