Have you ever wanted to change how Queensland tenancy laws work?
Here is your chance!
The Residential Tenancies Act is under review.
Public submissions are due by June 22!
The Queensland government has just released a Tenancies Act Policy Review Paper for discussion. Responses are due to the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) by June 22.
The release of this Paper is the last formal opportunity to comment to government about proposed changes to tenancy law before decisions about how to amend the Residential Tenancies Act are made by Cabinet later in the year. It is important for government to hear the views of as many tenants as possible.
The Paper makes suggestions as a point of discussion. The Minister for Housing, Honourable Robert Schwarten has said that he wants to hear the ideas of the community about how the rental market regulation could be improved before any final decisions were made." So please have you say!
If you would like a copy of the Paper you can download it from the Residential Tenancies Authority's website http://www.rta.qld.gov.au/ or our own http://www.tuq.org.au/ Alternatively, if you don't have internet access, you can call our office (07-3257 1411) or the RTA directly on 1300 366 311 to arrange for a Paper to be sent to you.
The more tenants who make submissions the more effective we will be in protecting tenants' rights. This opportunity will not come again for many years!
Submissions are due on the 22 June!
If you would like any information on the Tenants' Union's position on issues please contact us.
If you want to have your say, you can comment on a single issue, a range of issues or all the issues considered in the Paper. You may find that a topic of interest to you has been overlooked and you can make a submission on that as well. Submissions can short or long, in dot point or letter form, or more formally set out - however it suits you.

When the review of the legislation was announced, the Government called for submissions as to what should be in the new legislation. The Tenants' Union provided the Government with a submission for that stage of the process. The TU will do another submission in response the paper just released.
Tenants can have input into this process by making their own submissions or contacting the TU to incorporate their views with the TU submission.
