The Tenants' Union of Queensland operates a specialist legal service for tenants. This service is located in the Union's statewide office in Brisbane and is funded under Legal Aid Queensland's Community Legal Centre Funding Program.
The legal service undertakes casework and assists with research and law reform activities. The service also provides legal expertise in the development of training materials and community education publications.
Tenants are referred to the legal service through the telephone advice service or through Tenancy Advice and Advocacy Service or community workers.
The priorities for casework assistance by the legal service include:
- Conducting test cases which seek to achieve favourable court or tribunal decisions for tenants.
- Assisting tenants who face imminent eviction from their home.
- Providing assistance to tenants who are required to attend a hearing in the Small Claims Tribunal
