Organisation

The Tenants’ Union provides a range of tenancy information and advocacy services to Queensland tenants including: a telephone advice service, tenancy publications, community education activities, tenancy law training, research on tenancy issues, policy development and tenancy law reform campaigns.

For more information about the work of the Tenants' Union of Queensland contact us for a copy of our Annual Report.

Funding

Funding for the Tenants' Union of Queensland comes from the interest earned on tenant bond money. Currently the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) holds and manages over 260 million dollars of tenant bonds. Interest earned on tenant bonds funds the RTA and community based tenant services.

Each year the RTA provides funds to the Department of Housing, Tenant Advice and Advocacy Service (Queensland) Program. This program administers funding to community based tenant services including the Tenants' Union of Queensland and local Tenant Advice and Advocacy Services.

The Tenants' Union also receives recurrent funding from Legal Aid Queensland under the Community Legal Centres Program. This funding provides for a full-time solicitor and administrative support for the Tenants' Union's legal service.

From time-to-time the Tenants' Union also receives grants or project funding to conduct specific projects or develop resources.

Management

The Tenants’ Union is managed by Steering Committee which is made up of volunteer members who are elected at the Tenants' Union’s Annual General Meeting each year.

The Tenants’ Union Steering Committee meets monthly to oversee the management of the organisation and ensure that the organisation is meeting its aims and objectives. Membership of the Steering Committee is open to all ordinary members of the Tenants’ Union.

In addition to the Steering Committee the Tenants’ Union has a number of sub-committees and working parties that oversee particular aspects of the work of the Union.

In North Queensland the Northern Development Group (NDG) is the sub-committee that provides support in relation to the work of the Tenants’ Union’s North Queensland office in Cairns.

Tenants’ Union members are encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting each year and participate in Tenants’ Union committees.
